Tehri Dam

The Uttarakhand government has been facing a lot of flak from everyone, especially so-called self-proclaimed environmentalists, for the dams on the rivers being a cause of the flood and destruction, but initial flood assessment reports show that the Tehri Dam was able to absorb a huge amount of water after the cloud burst, and actually saved towns like Haridwar and Rudraprayag from almost complete destruction. Reports suggest that the river downstream would have swelled by more than 30 feet at some of these pilgrim towns, washing away everything in their path...
