India At The Olympics - Highest Medal Tally

With Mary Kom storming into the semis, India are now assured of a 4th medal at London, our highest ever tally, and with Vijendar expected to win his QF bout later tonight, we might well be on way to the 5th.

Vikas Gowda has made it to the final of the discus throw, and could well give India it's first every athletics medal. We have had our sportsmen doing pretty well in sports like rowing and even had an odd entry in swimming. Boxing has been a strength, even though a few pathetic scoring decisions robbed many of our champions of a rightful win. Yes, the shooters did not do as well as expected, and the women's archery team also missed its mark.

A few days back, I asked how important it was for a country like India to invest in sports.

What we have today is an example of how sustained institutional support is paying steady dividends. With private organizations like Olympic Gold Quest (I am related/connected with them too!) supproting these sportsmen, and the government chipping in with some great facilities, I think the tide is definitely turning, and in the future Olympics, we will have hordes of medals.

Mark my words...
